Does My Child Need Eye Glasses?

According to the National Center for Health Statistics a survey from 2019 indicated that 25.3% of children aged 2-17 work eyeglasses or conatct lenses. Source: National Center for Health Statistics, National Health Interview Survey, 2019. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhis.htm

That’s roughly a quarter of all children with a requirement for corrective eyewear. Does your child fall into this category? Let’s talk about three common warning signs that your child would benefit from eyeglasses.

1) Trouble Focusing in Class
One of the most common indicators of vision impairment in children starts at school. Your child’s ability to focus on the whiteboard or projector screen at school will influence their retention of the information and their overall success in school. If as a parent you start to see grades slip, this could be an issue that eyeglasses can solve. Simple astigmatic corrections can sharpen up blurred edges, and give your child the best shot at a quality education.

2) Headaches
Another common indicator of vision impairment in children are headaches. Excessive straining of the eyes can cause migraine headaches, especially in children. Staring across a classroom or focusing on a given task for too long without corrective lenses may give rise to headaches. Headaches are a common indicator of eyewear needs for your child
3) Eye Strain or Blurred Vision
This one may seem obvious, but a behavior as seemingly innocuous as repeated rubbing of the eyes or squinting can be an indicator that your child needs glasses. In Santa Barbara, we get lots of sunny days that can inevitably lead to eye strain without proper sunglass lens protection. However, noting your child’s behavior if you see excess squinting or rubbing of the eyes can be an indicator.
